The importance of Environment Design

During this pandemic, if you’re working from home — do you find yourself more focused or less focused on your work? This can be because of the environment you operate in. Look around, do you see something that your mind unconsciously ignores? and is there something that grabs your attention immediately?

For me, it’s a couch, if I have a couch right in front of me, I’d likely want to take my laptop and sit on it after the most important meetings are taken care of in the morning, then I would unconsciously turn to Netflix, giving myself the excuse of taking a break. This automatic reaction of couch = Netflix is not a surprise. Over the years I have associated laying on the couch with leisure time hence, it is now like muscle memory.

You want to put fewer steps between you and the good behaviour — Brian Tracy

Environment means the surroundings in which you live or operate. I like to keep my work desk free of any drinks. When things are stressful during work, without thinking I would grab the glass of water or coffee and it would feel like an immediate break, my mind would shift briefly from the task on hand to for example, how cold the water is — do I need to add ice?
Figuring out what helps you focus or what distracts you is more important than you think.

We need to be more intentional of the things around us and whether they are taking away from what we want to achieve every day or helping us achieve it.
